Directions to Commerce Tiger Stadium
Here’s a photo from the Google satellite view of Tiger field. Maybe this will be helpful for visiting fans to see where the parking is located and such. everyone has gps or gets online directions but it helps to see the actual layout before getting there.

Season Passes for Commerce Tigers
If anyone is unaware, you can purchase season passes for all Commerce Tiger Athletic events. The passes are good for all home games and include every sport. The prices are $175 for 2 passes and can be purchased by contacting Rodney Gary.
New Commerce High School
I’ll be glad when the new Commerce High School is completed. It will be a good thing for the students, staff, and community. And I won’t have to hear about East Jackson’s “nice new school” so much (it is truly a nice campus though). The new gym will be a great advantage over the archaic one that has been there since Napoleon was taking over the world. Hopefully it will improve the basketball program just by offering a better setting.
With the wrestling program on the rise I look for a more rounded athletic program in the years to come. Football will always be king here in Commerce so no need to worry about that.
History Updates coming soon
Got some history updates to do in the next few days…….
Getting Recruited for College Athletics
I find it interesting who gets a college scholarship and who doesn’t no matter the sport. Having good grades is super important and can be the difference between you getting a free ride in college or losing out to a guy with the same skill level but a better grade point average. I remember when Michael Collins was a senior. Every time someone mentioned him and his college choices they always pointed out how good of a student he was. They also mentioned the high character person he was as well. So if you are looking for an athletic scholarship don’t be a knucklehead or slacker in the classroom. Now if you are Lebron James type athlete you can get F’s in school, be a bad guy, and still make it big time. But Lebron is .00000000001% of the population so don’t count on that!
I also hear a lot of talk about kids being disappointed that they did not get promoted to colleges by either their parents or coaches. I’m sure that is the case but the responsibility still lies with the student. Personal responsibility is key in every aspect of life. If you think you have a chance to go to college to play football and don’t know how to get started, go ask your coach or research in online or get a book on it. There is no excuse in today’s information age for not finding out on your own what you need to know to make your life better. If you want recruiters to see you then they need to “see you”. The best way to do that is to get your DVD highlights in front of them either by getting them a DVD or getting the highlights online for them to see. The key to getting recognition is to make connections. Keep in mind that to get what you want you have to help others get what they want. In other words don’t just think “I want a college scholarship”. Think, “how can I help this University’s baseball team”.
I recommend reading Guerrilla Marketing which is for business but can be applied in the recruiting process. Also read Seth Godin’s blog, which is about marketing and you have to market yourself unless you are the next Michael Jordan (there is no next MJ by the way). The point is if you are like Washaun Ealey with immense talent then recruiters will know about you easily. If you are not a super talent then you need to market yourself. A good free resource is woodsrecruiting.com

Town Hall for Hope
Just wanted to post a link to an event that is coming up at the end of this month. It is being put on by financial guru Dave Ramsey and is intended to offer some positive news and motivation in this negative economic time. Hopefully it will be available in our area but I have not seen it listed close yet.

Michael Collins Video Clip
Just flipping through my youtube channel and wanted to post this from GoBigC.

Jefferson Finds New Football Man
Apparently the Dragons intend to keep their football program on the upswing. They hired T. McFerrin who has a 77% winning percentage appears to be a winner. It will be interesting to see what happens with a new coach in place after last season’s success.
The Economy and Sports
This topic will get more attention the longer the economy continues to suck. In the video below a genius reporter is questioning the head coach for UConn’s basketball team about the fact that he is the highest paid state employee. Credit to coach Calhoun for cracking back on the guy for asking a stupid question.A more politically correct person would have went along and said how sorry he was for being successful in his career. According to this reporter, the fact that their state had a deficit meant that a sports coach had no business making millions. Calhoun pointed out that his program generated $12 per year.
This relates to a news article in the Commerce News last week about govt worker salaries and more specifically teachers. I recognize how important teachers are but I think some people who work for the govt have the idea that they are more valuable than what the market place says. Some have an entitlement mentality and often argue that athletics are not as important as academics. While I agree with that, I do not agree with the next argument they make about pro athletes not being worth millions or football coaches making very good money while teachers just “make a living”. You are only worth what the public or open market is willing to pay. No more no less. Thousands of people willingly pay to get into their hometown high school football game every week because it is “worth it” to them. Public schools / teachers are paid directly through property taxes which translates into a threat of having your house stolen if you don’t pay.
If anyone needs to be questioned about their salaries it is governors who ran their states into the red or other bureacrats who waste tax money because there are no consequences for them. State employees like Coach Calhoun should be applauded for creating a profit and not being a drain on “We The People”.
