Jefferson Loses Football Coach

Jefferson will be searching for a new head football coach this off season now that Bill Navas has packed up and headed to Duluth for an AD job. With the economy being jacked up, who can blame him for taking a better job? I assume it is a good bit more money because of the location and the increased responsibility. Usually the Dragon coaches leave after being invited to do so. That is code for they are normally fired for losing to Commerce on a regular basis.
Navas, however, had plenty of good will in the bank after two straight years with decisive wins over the Tigers. I joked that he would get a lifetime contract after this past season’s win in Commerce. If he did I guess he was not as happy with it as the program was with him. I wonder how much he really like coaching if he was willing to give up that duty to oversee the athletic program in Duluth. I’m sure there is plenty to keep him busy but there will be a big difference from that and calling plays on Friday night.
I imagine Jefferson will be willing to spend good money replacing coach Navas. They would like to keep the two game streak against Commerce going if possible. For anyone who thinks Navas is abandoning his team just realize that he would have been fired without a blink had he lost to the Tigers two years ago. Rightly so I would add. Also he never made it out of the second round of the playoffs so it is not like they are replacing a legend. He was offered a better gig and took it just like most regular people would.

Multi Sports

Commerce is clearly a football school. Other schools lean toward basketball and some toward baseball. Why these trends start or how is probably just timing or luck. It likely is hard for a small school to thrive in more than one sport if the athletes are pushed to stay away from anything except the main sport in the school. When the pool  of athletes is a small one then other sports suffer. That is just the way it is. One example is Jefferson’s QB who apparenly is a great basketball player. He was allowed the opportunity to show his talents on the football field while helping the Dragons to one of their best season in decades. A team benefits from cross over athletes. The athlete sometimes gains nothing except extra work and the possiblity of injury. So hats off to those unselfish enough to help their school in more than one way.
