Bridge Painting

I wonder when the bridge painting started. Of course I mean the bridge between Jefferson and Commerce. It goes on each year where students from each school paint the school colors on the bridge on the road from Commerce to Jefferson. I’ll try to find out from Coach Prickett.

Jefferson Finds New Football Man

Apparently the Dragons intend to keep their football program on the upswing. They hired T. McFerrin who has a 77% winning percentage appears to be a winner. It will be interesting to see what happens with a new coach in place after last season’s success.

Jefferson Loses Football Coach

Jefferson will be searching for a new head football coach this off season now that Bill Navas has packed up and headed to Duluth for an AD job. With the economy being jacked up, who can blame him for taking a better job? I assume it is a good bit more money because of the location and the increased responsibility. Usually the Dragon coaches leave after being invited to do so. That is code for they are normally fired for losing to Commerce on a regular basis.
Navas, however, had plenty of good will in the bank after two straight years with decisive wins over the Tigers. I joked that he would get a lifetime contract after this past season’s win in Commerce. If he did I guess he was not as happy with it as the program was with him. I wonder how much he really like coaching if he was willing to give up that duty to oversee the athletic program in Duluth. I’m sure there is plenty to keep him busy but there will be a big difference from that and calling plays on Friday night.
I imagine Jefferson will be willing to spend good money replacing coach Navas. They would like to keep the two game streak against Commerce going if possible. For anyone who thinks Navas is abandoning his team just realize that he would have been fired without a blink had he lost to the Tigers two years ago. Rightly so I would add. Also he never made it out of the second round of the playoffs so it is not like they are replacing a legend. He was offered a better gig and took it just like most regular people would.

Jefferson Loses to Lovett

The rumor is that the Jefferson Dragons are going to try to extend coach Navas’ contract to a lifetime deal. The fan base has been so enthused about the one loss season they can’t see letting this guy get away. One Dragon fan leaving the stands was quoted as saying , “this season was the greatest thing that has ever happened in my life”! Another fan said they were going to change their kids’ names (all 4 of them) to Bill next week.  Apparently playing a weak schedule, even though in AA this year, and losing at home by 10 points to a 3 loss team is historic in Jefferson.

Seriously though I wish they had won just so a third round game would have been close by.
